Location: Kennett Square, PA
Open Date: Sep 12, 2025
Deadline: Oct 12, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The Agricultural Systems and Microbial Genomics (ASMG) laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to join our team investigating microbial ecology, host-microbe interactions, and metabolic profiling in animal systems. The successful candidate will take a central role in isolating and characterizing anaerobic microorganisms, processing gut-and rumen-derived samples, and applying molecular and metabolomic techniques. This position involves independent experimental work as well as close collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI) and multidisciplinary partners to generate, analyze, and disseminate high-quality data.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, conduct, and troubleshoot laboratory and on-farm research projects, including work with commercial farms and the New Bolton research herd.
  • Isolate, cultivate, and maintain bacteria and archaea, including strict anaerobes, using anaerobic chambers and Hungate techniques.
  • Prepare specialized media and manage anaerobic culture systems.
  • Process gut and rumen samples for DNA, RNA, and protein extraction.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation.
  • Conduct metabolite profiling using HPLC, GC, and advanced analytical platforms (e.g., LC-MS, GC-MS, NMR).
  • Analyze molecular, sequencing, and metabolomic datasets; contribute to bioinformatics and statistical workflows.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, manage inventory, and ensure smooth operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Contribute to manuscripts, presentations, grant submissions, and reports.
  • Mentor and train students and junior researchers in microbiology, molecular, and analytical methods.
  • Ensure compliance with biosafety, chemical safety, and institutional regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the PI.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree (or higher) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Animal Science, Analytical Chemistry, or related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with anaerobic microbiology techniques strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in molecular methods (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR/qPCR, library preparation).
  • Practical experience with HPLC and GC systems; familiarity with metabolomics workflows.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with LC-MS, GC-MS, or other advanced metabolomic/proteomic techniques.
  • Familiarity with R, Python, or other bioinformatics/statistical platforms.
  • Prior contributions to peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience assisting with grant writing or scientific reporting.

Application Instructions
The application should include a letter of intent, a current curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of three references.
